Lynx Air’s announcement of $100 return flights from Calgary direct to Victoria means easier access to the island for golfers...

Canada’s new ultra-affordable airline Lynx Air will be offering two services a week between Calgary and Victoria starting on May 12, increasing to three by mid-June 2022.

Tickets will start from just $39* including taxes and fees, one way from Victoria to Calgary. Prices from Calgary to Victoria will start at $49.

“We are excited to be adding beautiful Victoria to our network… We will continue to ramp up our schedule in the lead-up to summer, so please stay tuned.” – Merren McArthur, CEO, Lynx Air

This can only be good news for Vancouver Island golf courses. Fewer dollars spent on airfares means more money for playing extra rounds.

In the related press release, Geoff Dickson, President and CEO, Victoria Airport Authority commented, “As the economy begins to reopen, we are pleased to see Lynx introduce service between Calgary and Victoria... A low-cost airline like Lynx will offer affordable travel options for our community and provide opportunities for travellers to explore the beauty and culture of Victoria.”

In a post on Twitter, the golf package portal Golf Vancouver Island (@VIGolfTrail) was enthusiastic about the news, “... With round-trip base fares from Calgary under $100, golfing on the Island just became that much easier!”

GVI’s Chris Elder added that there will be other routes and airlines coming online as well, “In addition to airlines like Lynx coming to Victoria, we are seeing more flights arriving [in] other Island airports. Starting March 29th, new ultra low-cost (ULC) carrier Flair Airlines will add additional service to/from Edmonton and Calgary to Comox (3x weekly from each city), and in June, ULC Swoop Airlines will introduce additional (4x weekly) service to/from Edmonton to Comox.

“It is very exciting to see additional flight capacity returning to Vancouver Island’s airports. Providing more options in getting golfers to the Vancouver Island Golf Trail, Canada’s year-round golf destination is a benefit for travellers and is greatly valued by our partner courses, hotels, and experience providers.”
