Meet Jamie Moran

Crown Isle’s new Director of Golf (left) has returned to BC after more than a decade in Atlantic Canada and he brings an impressive resume...

Last year he was awarded the prestigious Murray Tucker Club Professional of the Year Award by the PGA of Canada. And, oh yeah, he can play. Last week, he played in the VIPT event held at Highland Pacific placing second after shooting a tidy 2-under par 69.

He recently sat down with Murray Brookshaw who hosts Crown Isle’s excellent “Crowncast” podcast which you can listen to HERE but we have pulled out a few excerpts from that interview to whet your appetite…

On where he grew up…
I grew up in (BC) Canada up on the northwest coast and - aging myself here - but played the 1994 BC junior here at Crown Isle and I've always kind of had a little passion for Crown Isle since then, and enjoyed it there and it's great to be here again.

On being known as being very calm…
I've been accused that sometimes it doesn't look like I care a lot, but that's not the case. I don't think there's anything in life to take too serious. Enjoy it. And at the end of the day, I think being calm helps me in a lot of situations in this industry.

On his teaching philosophy…
It is to try and keep it as simple as possible. I'm not going to get all my students to swing like Dustin Johnson or Rory McIlroy. So we take what they do well and see if we can't fix their kind of one glaring area and the biggest thing for me is communicating to that person that they're understanding why we're doing something and they understand how to fix it. And then to be able to show them results quickly when they do it correctly. It does equate to a better shot or whatever our goal might be for that lesson. And to leave them a plan to continue to improve without me staring over their shoulder saying 'you did this or you did that.'

On developing The Academy At Crown Isle…
We're going to do it slowly. We're going to make sure that we do the basics well. We need to be able to provide good instruction one-on-one, we need to be able to provide some good Junior programming, we need to be able to provide some beginner clinics and once we know we can achieve that at a high level then we'll look to grow it and maybe we're a destination Academy where people are coming here for schools, but it is baby steps.

On his approach for the golf operation…
… (It’s) just kind of a mind frame for me and my staff, that we're going to have an unexpected service level; that we're going to rise where our guests and our members... I want them to be enthusiastic about what we're doing. We do work on a golf course and we're fortunate in the ones that enthusiasm to come across to the customers as well. And then just all of us to build relationships whether it's our members or staff or guests that come, we do those things well, I think Crown Isle is heading in a good direction.
