Bishop Signs With Kent State University

The Victoria Golf Club product and National Team Jr. member will now follow in the footsteps of some of Canada’s best players...

After a 2020 to remember where he won both the B.C. Junior and Juvenile Championships, Billy Bishop put together a video that got a lot of views from college coaches. (See video and related story by Brad Ziemer.)

From more than a few choices, it was Kent State that seemed the right fit and with the success of other Canadians who have played their college golf there, it’s easy to see why Billy made the Ohio university his choice. The trio of Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes, and Taylor Pendrith all were Kent State “Golden Flashes” and even golf coach Jon Mills is from north of the border.

Mills earned All-American status in his senior year and later played on both the Web.com and PGA Tours. The two-year head coach was ecstatic about Bishop joining the team, “Willy is an exciting player who truly understands how to play the game. He is incredibly versatile around the greens and putts the ball at an elite level.”

Corey Conners who has arguably established himself as the top-ranked Canadian on the PGA TOUR remembers very fondly his time at Kent State. After being inducted into the college’s sports hall of fame in October, Conners said in a tweet, “Kent State has meant the world to my family. I met my wife Jenna there. We named our first son, Kenton, after Kent.”

Bishop will not be the only Canadian freshman on the squad next year. Also signing was Ontario’s Ben MacLean, the top-ranked under-19 golfer in Ontario.
